FCSC 496A/596A – Understanding Youth Development: An Applied Approach

Official Catalogue Description This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of youth development and its implications to adolescent development. The course will focus on the theories and practices of youth development as these relate to the work of those individuals who work directly or indirectly with young people (e.g., teachers, case workers, youth development program coordinators, and others). Topics covered in this course will include adolescent development, applied developmental science, moral development, learning, and program evaluation. In addition, issues pertaining to the use of social science in applied settings will be examined. The emphasis in this course is to enhance the students’ understanding of the role of youth development in promoting the positive development of all young people and the role it plays in an adolescent’s successful transition to adulthood.
